Is your preschooler ready to trace their name?

Name tracing works best once a child can:

If those are still coming along, keep the sheet anyway and trace the letters with a finger, a toy car or a paintbrush with water. It builds the same movement without the frustration.

Setting up the sheet for little hands

This page starts with the settings that suit most preschoolers: extra large letters, solid gray strokes and every row set to trace. Each page holds five rows, which is about as much as a three or four year old will happily do in one sitting.

For a child who only knows their first letter, try the letter tracing page and choose that single letter.

Ways to make it fun

Questions people ask

At what age can a child trace their name?

Many children start tracing their name between ages 3 and 4, once they can hold a crayon and draw lines and circles. Writing it without tracing usually comes later, often around age 4 or 5.

Should a preschooler learn capitals or lowercase first?

Capitals are made of simpler strokes and all sit between the same two lines, so many preschool programs start there. Kindergarten usually expects a capital first letter followed by lowercase. Choose ALL CAPS or As typed under Capital letters.

Why are the letters solid gray instead of dotted?

A thick, unbroken line is easier for young children to follow than a row of dots. Switch to Dotted under Letter style when the gray lines start to feel easy.

Is it free for preschool teachers?

Yes, for home and classroom use. To make a page for every child in your class, paste your class list on the editable worksheets page.
